Ice cream time

My happiest memories of the Fourth of July are ones where I was just a kid sitting in my grandfather's back yard turning the ice cream bucket, making ice cream for the family. Granddad wanted all the grandchildren to take turns turning it slow; when it came time to eat ice cream we all would said we had something to do with it being made.

My memories of my grandfather's house on the Fourth are my most enjoyable time in that house. It's the only time I can remember when all the family would be in. The women in family would cook the dinner and Dad would bring over a ham or some kind of meat. We gathered around my grandfather's table and he would pray and we would dig in.

After the dinner we would either go to the TV room and watch the Rangers play - or if the sun was already down - we would go outside and get ready to shoot off fireworks. My favorite firework was the green and red tank. I also remembered when I was child you could shoot off bottle rockets. You can't do that now on Dogwood Lane, anymore.

After fireworks, we would eat homemade ice cream. Sometimes Granddad or the aunts would go out to peach farms in Pittsburg and grab fresh peaches. We would cut them up and eat them with it. It was so good - homemade ice cream and fresh peaches. There's nothing better.

So, I hope everyone enjoys the Fourth of July and don't forget about the Turtle Race tomorrow at the VFW. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m. There is fun for all ages; bring your friends. I hope everyone is safe and please, if you haven't made homemade ice cream, I do recommend trying to.
