The Mount Pleasant ISD board of trustees approved a request at their last meeting to place a plaque at the Colley Baseball Field in memory of Coach O.L. Colley.
The request was made in a letter by former Mayor Jerry Boatner. In a letter to the school board, Boatner noted: “The Tiger baseball field is named in honor of O. L. Colley, Jr., and I am writing on behalf of the O. L. Colley, Jr. Scholarship Committee.”
“Scholarships have been awarded to deserving Tiger baseball players,” wrote Boatnet, “and our committee would be honored if we might place a black granite plaque at the Colley Baseball Field to commemorate and explain his contributions to MPISD as a teacher and coach. This would be at no cost to the school district.”
“We propose placing this plaque on a concrete block base to harmonize with existing materials,” he continued. “It would be located across from the concession stand and behind the bleachers.”
The plaque has been approved by Coach Colley's family, concluded Boatner.
Colley, who died March 8 of this year at the age of 91, started the Mount Pleasant baseball program in 1947, said Supt. Dr. Lynn Dehart. Board members agreed it is a fitting memorial and approved the request.
The O.L. Colley, Jr. Scholarship Committee members are Boatner, Bobby Alexander, Rex Allen, John Boatner, D'Ann Colley, Oza Colley, Herb Cross, R. E. Dodson, and Chairman Ernie McAnally.
