Mount Pleasant High School’s boys and girls track and field teams commence their scheduled today by competing at a meet today that starts at 4 p.m. on Sulphur Springs.
Head Coach Karen Williams lost about a third of her varsity girls track team last year, leaving Mount Pleasant High School with some decent numbers for this season.
“As far as numbers, I have plenty,” Williams said. “Still, the varsity roster is not as big as I would like it. We could use more competitors for sprinting events. But the girls we have on the team right now are very hard working and I know are going to give it their all. So we will focus on each girl’s strengths and try to be as competitive as possible this season.”
The Lady Tigers lost some noteworthy racers, but the returning crew is equally talented.
“We lost some key runners from last year’s varsity team, but I still have about seventy percent of last year’s roster back,” Head Coach Karen Williams said. “I think that is a big asset for us when it comes to things like leadership, and I have some very experienced girls this season. I also have some freshmen who are going to be eye-catchers this season.”
Looking at her team’s upcoming schedule, Williams knows the Lady Tigers are going to have their hands full.
“The competition is going to be a lot tougher for everyone this season,” Williams said. “Teams like Hallsville always has some very good runners as well as jumpers. So we are just going to give it our best and do what we can.”
On the Lady Tigers track and field team this season are Adriana De Jesus, BreAmber Duncan, Abigail Flores, Etosha Fridia, Josie Garcias, Daniela Garfias, Le'Daisha Gillard, Katelynn Graham, Breana Green, Norma Hanson, Shaquanna Hendrix, Imelda Hernandez, Wesley Hernandez, Onyx Hines, Ladeja Holloman, Jacara Johnson, Perla Juarez, Justice Lewis, K'Tya Linwood, Selena Lopez, Kenna Luevano, Alina Luna, Juaniata Luna, Sandra Martinez, Jazmine Martinez, Esther Cupil, Mikala Carr, La'Keisha Cannon, Kadeja Brown, Summer Bratton, Jasmine Bratton, Denisha Bolden, Adela Beltran, Sandra Banda, Genesis Alvarez, Jazmin Walker, Maria Vega, Ilse Vasquez, Precious Thompson, Lee Anna Steele, Jada Savage, Julissa Sanchez, KLadaimond Price, Bre'Anna Perry, Amairani Perez, Laura Oviedo, Dez'Rae Nickerson, Enikkia Neal, Diana Nava, Giovana Munoz, Agnelia Moreno, Jessica Moreno, and Maddie Mitchell.
When it comes to experience, Mount Pleasant High School’s varsity boys track and field team has plenty.
“Most of the kids who ran last year, I have back for this season,” Head Coach Karl Whitehurst said. “All of that experience is very valuable.”
A more extensive lineup, though, would be nice to have as well.
“We need improvements everywhere, but especially in depth,” Whitehurst said. “There are just not a whole lot of kids out for track right now. Our varsity and j.v. boys number around 30 right now. But I still think we can be competitive in all of the events.”
Which is why the Tigers are often tasked with competing in more events.
“We have to spread them out more,” Whitehurst said. “More of our boys are relied upon running in more races and competing in additional events.”
Mount Pleasant will have plenty of tough opposition this season.
“Our district is going to be a challenge this season,” Whitehurst said. “We have Hallsville coming in and they usually have a good track team. We also have teams like Texas High and Sulphur Springs who are equally competitive. We have competed against Pine Tree and Marshall in the past and they definitely have some very good athletes.”
Whitehurst is also counting on some of last year’s region qualifiers to make another serious run this season.
“All of those region qualifiers advanced for the first time, so their combined experience is going to be very valuable this spring,” Whitehurst said. “Now they know what to expect and that si be a benefit for them.”
On the boys team this season are Terrance Taylor, Niko Olvera, Josh Dykes, Garrett Craig, Quinton Edney, KD Cannon, T'hneous Smith, TJ Rovell, Benji Boyd, Rolando Hernandez, Flavio Huerta, Justin Shonfeld, LaDarrius Patterson, Jarvis Arnold, Luke Craddock, Daniel Craddock, Daimon Craddock, Jacorey Rogers, Brandon Douglas, Christian Lozano, Low Arzate, Jorge Martinez, and Morses Hernandez.
